1
If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side,
let Israel now say,
let Israel now say,
2
if it had not been Yahweh who was on our side,
when men rose up against us;
when men rose up against us;
3
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
when their wrath was kindled against us;
when their wrath was kindled against us;
4
then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
the stream would have gone over our soul;
the stream would have gone over our soul;
5
then the proud waters would have gone over our soul.
6
Blessed be Yahweh,
who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.
who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7
Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare.
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8
Our help is in Yahweh’s name,
who made heaven and earth.
who made heaven and earth.
POETRY
Where this chapter fits
Psalms belongs to Israel's wisdom/poetic tradition, where literary form matters as much as historical setting.
Chapter numbers were added long after the biblical books were written.
Read this chapter together with what comes immediately before and after it.
ANCIENT TEXT, MODERN QUESTIONS
Historical claims should be compared with historical evidence.
Scientific claims should be compared with science.
Moral claims should be examined morally.
Theological claims require theological and philosophical argument.
QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Don't skip the hard parts.
What kind of literature is this?
Narrative, poetry, prophecy, law, letters, wisdom, and apocalypse communicate differently.
What historical evidence matters?
Ask whether names, places, institutions, events, customs, and chronology can be independently investigated.
What are the strongest competing interpretations?
Compare serious Jewish, Christian, academic, and skeptical readings rather than caricatures.
