Stars, galaxies, planetary formation, cosmic history, light, distance, and the development of the universe.
SCIENCE & EVIDENCE
Some biblical claims concern the physical world and can be examined with astronomy, geology, biology, archaeology, genetics, medicine, history, and other evidence.
Other questions — such as ultimate purpose, morality, or whether God exists beyond nature — require different tools.
START WITH THE QUESTION
If someone claims Earth is only a few thousand years old, that is a physical claim about geology, astronomy, chemistry, and planetary history.
If someone claims an ancient city existed, archaeology and historical evidence become relevant.
If someone claims the universe has purpose, the question moves partly into philosophy.
Confusion starts when people use the wrong kind of evidence for the question being asked.
When a biblical claim makes a testable statement about the natural world, we compare it with the best available evidence.
We don't change the scientific standard because the claim happens to appear in scripture.
THE TOOLBOX
Stars, galaxies, planetary formation, cosmic history, light, distance, and the development of the universe.
Rock layers, erosion, tectonics, fossils, volcanic history, sedimentation, and the history of Earth.
Relationships among populations and species, ancestry, mutation, inheritance, and evolutionary history.
Fossils provide evidence about extinct organisms, ancient ecosystems, transitions, and biological change.
Material remains help reconstruct human settlements, cities, warfare, religion, agriculture, trade, and migration.
Written sources, inscriptions, manuscripts, coins, monuments, and independent testimony help evaluate claims about people and events.
CREATION
It depends heavily on what someone claims Genesis 1 is describing.
If the chapter is treated as a literal scientific chronology, major conflicts appear immediately.
Modern scientific reconstruction places stars before Earth, the Sun before terrestrial plants, land animals before birds, and human beings within a long biological history.
Genesis presents a different sequence.
AGE OF EARTH
Some biblical chronologies have been used to calculate an Earth only several thousand years old.
Modern science reaches a radically different conclusion through multiple independent methods.
Radioactive decay provides clocks that can be used to date minerals and rocks across enormous spans of time.
Ancient meteorites help scientists estimate the formation age of the solar system.
Geological formations preserve long sequences of deposition, erosion, uplift, volcanism, and environmental change.
Polar ice preserves layered records of past atmosphere, climate, volcanic events, and environmental conditions.
Overlapping tree-ring chronologies extend far beyond a simple few-thousand-year interpretation of Earth history.
Stellar evolution, planetary formation, and observations throughout the solar system independently support deep time.
A conclusion becomes much stronger when unrelated methods, based on different physical processes, converge on compatible results.
EVOLUTION
Evolution is sometimes presented as if it rests on one fossil, one scientist, or one controversial interpretation.
In reality, evolutionary biology draws on many independent categories of evidence.
Fossil sequences document extinct organisms and changing biological communities through geological time.
DNA relationships reveal patterns of shared ancestry that correspond strongly with other biological evidence.
Shared structural patterns among organisms make sense within a framework of common ancestry and modification.
The geographic distribution of species reflects isolation, migration, extinction, and evolutionary history.
Genetic change, natural selection, adaptation, and evolutionary divergence can be observed in living populations.
Fossils, archaeology, anatomy, and genetics place humans within the same broader evolutionary history as other organisms.
Accepting evolution does not logically require believing that God does not exist.
Some religious people reject evolution, others accept it as a natural process created or sustained by God, and others see it as evidence against traditional creation accounts.
NOAH'S FLOOD
Genesis describes a catastrophic flood that destroys life outside the ark.
A worldwide flood covering every mountain would leave enormous and distinctive geological, biological, ecological, and archaeological evidence.
That makes the Flood one of the Bible's most testable large-scale claims when interpreted globally.
Would Earth's sedimentary layers, erosion surfaces, volcanic deposits, reefs, and fossil sequences look the way they do after one recent global catastrophe?
Continuous ice records provide another independent test of recent global-flood models.
A recent population bottleneck involving only a handful of humans and animal pairs should leave detectable genetic signatures.
The modern distribution of isolated species raises questions about how animals would have dispersed from a single post-Flood location.
Archaeological chronologies can be compared with proposed dates for a worldwide destruction of human civilization.
Mesopotamian traditions contain major flood narratives that predate surviving biblical manuscripts and provide important literary context.
We'll examine the Flood in detail when we reach Genesis 6–9 rather than settle the question with a paragraph here.
ARCHAEOLOGY
Archaeology can confirm that a city existed, that an empire controlled a region, that a king or dynasty was known, or that a destruction event occurred.
But those findings do not automatically verify every theological or supernatural claim connected to the same story.
MIRACLES
Miracles create a different evidentiary problem.
If someone says an ordinary event happened, historians can compare sources, dates, witnesses, physical evidence, motives, and alternative explanations.
If someone says the laws of nature were suspended or a supernatural agent directly caused the event, the claim becomes much larger.
How close is the surviving account to the alleged event?
Five accounts that copied one earlier account are not equivalent to five independent witnesses.
“People believed a miracle occurred” is historically different from “the miracle actually occurred.”
Legend, misunderstanding, symbolism, exaggeration, fraud, memory, coincidence, and ordinary events may need consideration.
Extraordinary claims shouldn't be dismissed automatically, but neither should they receive a lower evidentiary standard.
Someone who assumes miracles are impossible and someone who assumes scripture cannot be wrong may both prejudge the conclusion.
THE RESURRECTION
The resurrection of Jesus isn't presented merely as a timeless metaphor. Early Christians claimed that something happened after Jesus was executed.
That means historical evidence matters.
Jesus' execution under Roman authority provides the historical starting point.
Resurrection belief appeared very early within the Christian movement.
Paul's letters predate the canonical Gospels and preserve important early claims about appearances of the risen Jesus.
The Gospels provide multiple resurrection narratives, but their differences also require examination.
Historical investigation should consider competing explanations rather than assuming either miracle or fraud from the beginning.
Whether resurrection is even possible depends partly on larger assumptions about God, nature, causation, and miracles.
We'll eventually devote a full investigation to the resurrection rather than pretending this overview settles Christianity's central claim.
LIMITS OF SCIENCE
Science investigates observable reality using evidence, measurement, modeling, testing, and repeatability.
That gives it extraordinary power for understanding the natural world.
But some questions are not straightforward laboratory questions.
Saying science cannot answer every philosophical question does not mean scientific evidence can be ignored whenever it becomes inconvenient.
“Science doesn't know everything” is not evidence that a particular religious claim is true.

SEE THE METHOD IN ACTION
Genesis 1 gives us an ideal first test case because it combines ancient literature, theology, cosmology, biology, astronomy, historical context, and competing interpretations.
